Marine Coatings: Essential Protection for Ships Against Harsh Marine Environment

They are also known as marine paints, are specialized paints or coatings that are applied to boats, ships, yachts and various offshore structures and ocean equipment that are exposed to saltwater, marine oxygenated atmosphere and hostile marine environments. These coatings offer corrosion protection and prevent premature deterioration of marine vessels and structures from sea water, UV radiation, microbial growth and mechanical damages.

Types of Marine Coatings

There are different types of coatings available in the market depending on the substrate material and environmental conditions the substrate needs protection from. Some of the major types are:

Antifouling Coatings: These are self-polishing coatings containing biocides that are applied to the underwater hull portion of vessels. They prevent biofouling organisms like algae, mollusks and marine organisms from attaching and growing on the hull. This reduces frictional underwater resistance and improves fuel efficiency.

Anticorrosive Coatings: Used for protection of all exposed metal surfaces including underwater running gear, anchors and chain plates. They form a barrier to prevent corrosion damages from seawater, salts and oxygen. Some common anticorrosive coatings include epoxy, alkyd and vinyl.

Tank Coatings: Applied to the inner surface of cargo and fuel tanks to protect from corrosion. They need to resist solvents and chemicals being carried. Epoxy tank coatings are usually employed.

Topside Coatings: Applied above waterline level and used on superstructures, decks and fittings. They protect metal, wood or composite substrates from UV radiation, moisture and slime growth. One-component acrylics and two-component polyurethanes are often used.

Finishing Coatings: Aesthetic coatings applied over anticorrosives or antifouling primer for improved appearance and gloss retention. They are more durable and offer UV protection.

Corrosion Protection: Coatings prevent corrosive sea water and oxygen from coming in direct contact with exposed metal hull or structures by forming a protective barrier. This considerably extends the operational life.

Fouling Control: Specialized antifouling coatings are capable of controlling biofouling by releasing biocides in a self-polishing process to maintain smooth hull surface. This enhances hydrodynamic efficiency.

Moisture Protection: Coatings applied above waterline prevent penetration and absorption of moisture into the substrate material that can cause degradation.

UV Resistance: They are formulated with UV absorbers provide resistance against degradation of coatings from solar radiation in the marine environment.

Chemical Resistance: Tank coatings insulate the metal from corrosion or reactions caused by fuel, chemicals and solvents carried inside cargo tanks.

Lifting & Maintenance Requirements

For optimal protection, coatings have periodic dry-docking and refurbishment requirements. Antifouling coatings need to be reapplied every 12-18 months as the biocides get spent. Waterline region is touched up between dockings. Anticorrosive coatings usually last 3-5 years in less aggressive conditions but need overcoating every 2-3 years in tropical waters.

Inspection of coated areas for damages or osmotic blistering is carried out every time a vessel is dry docked. Prep with abrasive blasting and reapplication of coatings is then performed as per SSPC standards. Proper surface preparation and application are important to ensure longevity and performance. With new high-performance coating systems coming up, docking periods may be extended. However, regular maintenance remains vital.
